How to Choose the Right College in Uttarakhand: 7 Things to Check

College brochures all look the same. These seven checks help you compare colleges in Uttarakhand on the things that actually matter.

Every college brochure promises experienced faculty, modern labs and great placements, which makes it almost impossible to compare colleges on those words alone. Whether you are looking at MBA, BCA, BBA or hotel management colleges in Uttarakhand, these seven checks will help you look past the brochure. We use IHMS Kotdwar as the example, but you can apply them to any college.

1. Approvals

Professional courses such as the MBA and MCA need approval from AICTE, the All India Council for Technical Education. Look for the college on the AICTE approval list for the current year. At IHMS, both the MBA and the MCA are AICTE approved.

2. University affiliation

Your degree is awarded by the university, not the college, so find out which university each course is affiliated to. IHMS programmes are affiliated to Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technical University (MBA and MCA) and Sri Dev Suman Uttarakhand University (BBA, BCA, B.Sc IT and BHM).

3. NAAC grade and recognition

NAAC accreditation shows that the college has been assessed on its teaching, infrastructure and governance. Check the grade and how long it is valid. IHMS holds a NAAC B+ grade, valid up to 2030, and is recognised under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act.

4. Labs and practical training

Ask to see the labs, not just photos of them. Computer courses need working computer labs, and hotel management needs real kitchens and a training restaurant. Find out how often students actually use them, and whether practical work continues in every year of the course.

5. Placement records you can verify

Ask for year-wise and programme-wise placement data with company names. A single high package means little without the full picture. If you can, talk to current students and alumni as well.

6. The total cost

Add up the tuition for every semester, the one-time charges, university exam fees, hostel and transport. Then ask about scholarships and how they are applied. At IHMS, the fee for every programme is published semester by semester on the fees page, and merit scholarships of up to 50% on tuition are available.

7. Safety and campus life

Check that the college has an active anti-ragging committee and a clear grievance process. Visit the hostel, ask about transport and think about the distance from home. A campus where you feel safe and settled makes the next few years much easier.

Visit before you decide

Nothing replaces a campus visit. Walk around, sit in on a class if you can and ask your questions in person. You are welcome to book a visit to IHMS or call us on +91-7902000023.
