MBA Specialisations: How to Choose the Right One

Choosing a specialisation is the biggest decision you make during an MBA. Here is a simple way to pick one, with the 12 groups offered at IHMS.

The first year of an MBA looks much the same for everyone: accounting, economics, marketing, HR, finance, operations and research methods. The second year is where your MBA becomes your own, because that is when you specialise. The choice can shape the early years of your career, so it deserves some thought.

How specialisation works at IHMS

The IHMS MBA is a two-year, AICTE-approved programme affiliated to Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technical University. In Semesters III and IV you take two major subjects from one specialisation group and a minor from another. There are 12 groups to choose from:

  • Finance
  • Marketing
  • Human Resource Management
  • Business Analytics
  • Data Science
  • Fin-Tech
  • International Business
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Healthcare and Hospital Management
  • Agribusiness Management
  • Rural Development
  • Entrepreneurship and Venture Development

The major and minor combination is useful. A marketing major with a business analytics minor, for example, prepares you for digital marketing roles where data matters every day.

Four questions to help you decide

What did you enjoy in the first year?

Think about the subjects where time passed quickly. If you liked working with numbers and markets, finance or fin-tech may suit you. If you enjoyed campaigns and consumer behaviour, look at marketing.

Where do you want to work?

Banks and insurance companies hire finance specialists. Hospitals need trained managers. Logistics and manufacturing firms look for supply chain skills, and companies that work with farmers and rural markets value agribusiness and rural development.

What did your internship teach you?

Every IHMS MBA student does a two-month summer internship at the end of the first year. Treat it as a test. If you came back excited about the work, that is a strong signal.

Do you plan to start a business?

If you do, the Entrepreneurship and Venture Development group is the natural place to start.

Do not choose on salary alone

It is tempting to pick whichever specialisation pays the most this year. But the subject you enjoy is usually the one you become good at, and over a career that matters far more than a small difference in your first salary.

Fees and admission

The MBA has 60 seats and costs ₹2.6 lakh for the full programme. You need a graduation degree with at least 50% marks. Admission is through merit, the IHMS Entrance Test or CUET, followed by counselling, and merit scholarships of up to 50% on tuition are available.
