BCA or B.Sc IT after Class 12: Which One Should You Choose?

Both are three-year computer degrees after Class 12, but they lead in slightly different directions. Here is how BCA and B.Sc IT compare at IHMS.

If you enjoy computers and want a degree straight after Class 12, two names come up again and again: BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications) and B.Sc IT (Bachelor of Science in Information Technology). Both take three years and both teach programming. At IHMS Kotdwar, both also follow the NEP syllabus of Sri Dev Suman Uttarakhand University and cost the same, ₹2.72 lakh for the full programme. So what actually separates them?

The short answer

BCA is built around software and applications. You write code from the first semester and, from Semester III, you choose a stream in Data Science or AI and Machine Learning. B.Sc IT takes a wider view of information technology: programming, yes, but also networks, the Internet of Things, Android and cloud computing.

If you see yourself building apps, websites or data tools, BCA is usually the better fit. If you are curious about how systems, networks and the cloud work together, B.Sc IT gives you more of that.

What you study in BCA

The first year covers computer fundamentals, C, data structures, Java and web technologies, along with an introduction to artificial intelligence. In the second year you move on to Python, databases, cyber security, C++, networks and algorithms, and you start your chosen stream. After Semester IV there is an eight-week internship or capstone project. The final year brings generative AI, data analysis with AI tools, stream electives and a major project.

BCA is also our largest programme, with 120 seats.

What you study in B.Sc IT

B.Sc IT starts with C, C++, data structures, computer fundamentals and mathematics. The second year adds Java, Python, databases, operating systems, algorithms and the Internet of Things. In the third year you study networks, AI, software engineering, data analytics with R, Android and cloud computing. Skill papers such as cyber security, web technology, MIS and cyber laws run alongside, and every core paper has lab work. The programme has 60 seats.

Careers after each course

There is a lot of overlap. Graduates of both courses apply for roles such as software developer, web developer, database administrator, data analyst and IT support engineer. BCA graduates often lean towards application development, web design and data roles, while B.Sc IT graduates more often move into networking, system administration and cloud support.

Our computer applications students have been selected by companies such as GlobalLogic and Webologix. In 2026, Webologix selected eight IHMS students from BCA, MBA, MCA, B.Sc IT and BBA, and the highest package was ₹14.16 LPA.

What about higher studies?

Both degrees make you eligible for an MCA, which many students take to move into senior development roles. IHMS offers a two-year, AICTE-approved MCA, so you can continue on the same campus. If you later want to move towards management, an MBA is open to you as well.

Eligibility and admission

You need to have passed Class 12. Admission is through merit, the IHMS Entrance Test or your CUET score, followed by counselling. Merit scholarships of up to 50% on tuition are available, depending on your Class 12 marks.

Still unsure?

Ask yourself one question: do I want to build software, or do I want to understand and run the systems that software lives on? If it is the first, choose BCA. If it is the second, choose B.Sc IT. Our counsellors on +91-7902000023 are happy to walk you through both syllabi.
