Hotel management suits people who like working with others, stay calm when things get busy and enjoy seeing a guest leave happy. If that sounds like you, the Bachelor of Hotel Management (BHM) is the most complete way into the industry after Class 12.
Hotel management is also where IHMS began. The college started with hospitality in 2006, and the department still runs the training kitchens, restaurant and hotel labs on our Kotdwar campus.
How long is the course and who can apply?
BHM is a four-year degree affiliated to Sri Dev Suman Uttarakhand University. You can apply once you have passed Class 12 in any stream, so arts, commerce and science students are all welcome. IHMS has 90 seats, and the total fee for the programme is ₹3.98 lakh.
What you learn, year by year
In the first year you train in the four core departments of a hotel: food production, food and beverage service, housekeeping and front office. Most of this happens in our labs rather than in a lecture hall.
The second year includes a full semester of learning inside the industry, followed by Indian cookery and advanced operations back on campus. The third year adds French, research, hospitality law, marketing and specialisation electives. In the final year you study HR, safety and travel documentation, choose a specialisation and spend Semester VIII in the industry again.

Why the industry semesters matter
Hotels like to hire people who have already worked a real shift. Semesters III and VIII place you inside a working hotel or hospitality business, so by the time you graduate you know how a kitchen copes with a busy wedding season and how a front desk handles a full house. That experience is exactly what interviewers ask about.
Career options after BHM
Graduates work as chefs, F&B service managers, front office managers, housekeeping managers, guest relations executives and banquet and event managers. The skills travel well beyond hotels too: cruise lines, airline and flight kitchens, hospitals and facility management companies all hire hospitality graduates, and some graduates go on to run their own restaurants.
IHMS alumni work at hotels such as Crowne Plaza (IHG) and Four Points by Sheraton.
Is it right for you?
Be honest with yourself about the hours. Hospitality means weekends, festivals and long shifts, especially early in your career. In return, you build skills that are useful across India and abroad, and there is plenty of room to grow if you are good with people.
If you would rather start working sooner, look at our one-year Certificate in Hotel Management, which you can join after Class 10. For the full degree, visit the BHM programme page or call our counsellors on +91-7902000023.
